First Date Auditions

When newbie Aaron meets the vivacious serial-dater Casey, a simple drink turns into a sidesplitting, high-stakes dinner in the bustling heart of New York City. In this real-time rollercoaster, their inner critics emerge, and the evening is anything but ordinary. Surrounded by meddling best friends, overbearing parents, pesky exes, and other antics, Aaron and Casey must navigate a maze of awkward moments and unexpected twists. Will their chemistry ignite into something extraordinary before the check arrives, or will this be another dating disaster? Whether you’ve swiped right or are a seasoned dater, you’re sure to fall head over heels with this show.

Audition Information

All auditions and any callbacks will take place on December 2nd, 2023 at the Hoogland Center for the Arts. Small audition groups will begin at 10am. Auditionees are asked to prepare a 1-minute contemporary Broadway style vocal selection. We welcome selections from the show, but not required. We have provided pdf music cuts in the links below if you are interested. After your vocal audition, you may be asked to do a cold reading from the script.

Music Cuts

All Auditionees will be asked to participate in a dance audition in the afternoon which will be right before callbacks. Tentative time for this will be 2pm on Dec. 2nd but may be pushed back if we need to add more audition time slots. The staff will confirm the dance audition time with you at audition check-in.

If needed, callbacks will occur after the dance audition. And should end before 6pm.

Rehearsal Schedule

Rehearsals for First Date will start after January 1st, 2024. Because this is a small cast show, we will base the rehearsal schedule around the availability of the actors and staff. In general actors can expect to rehearse 4-5 times a week Sunday-Saturday. We will not rehearse more than 5 times a week. Please be as thorough on your audition form with your conflicts. We will be collecting conflicts for all days of the week. Actors cast as Casey and Aaron will likely be called more frequently than the ensemble.

Character Descriptions

All of the characters are open to all ethnicities. Character gender identity is listed below; however, actors are encouraged to audition for the roles they feel most comfortable portraying on stage.

Leads

Aaron: Late 20s-30s, New Yorker. Jewish investment banker. He has never been on a blind date before. Out of his element, nervous, and trying way too hard; (male identifying, tenor).

Casey: Late 20s-30s, Daring, bold, and delightfully controversial. All as a defense mechanism; (female identifying, Belt/mix).

Supporting Roles

*Looking to cast at least 5 people for the supporting roles. But the staff has the right to increase cast size. Roles may be split up depending on auditions and callbacks.

Man #1 (Jewish Chorus / Gabe / Youtube / Edgy British Guy): Gabe is the mega dude/womanizer; has every answer to every question about women that has ever been asked, and probably has a catch phrase to go with that answer; Aaron’s best friend since childhood. British Guy is a bad boy from Casey’s past, cocky, neglectful, and overcompensating; (male identifying, bari-tenor range).*

Woman #1 (Grandma Ida / Lauren / Facebook / Female with Megaphone #2 / Aaron’s Mother): Lauren is happily (somewhat) married to her highly successful husband Kevin, and wonders out loud why Casey can’t break her bad habits and learn to catch a winner; constantly trying to fix Casey, Lauren is more concerned with listening to her own advice than actually helping her sister. Grandma Ida is Aaron’s dead grandmother who feels strongly that her son should marry a Jewish woman; (female identifying, belt/mix with soprano.)*

Man #2 (Reggie / Aaron’s Future Son / Instagram / Edgy Rocker Guy): Reggie is Casey’s fabulous fierce gay and over-imaginative best friend, easily sent into a tailspin of jealousy, paranoia, and drama. Edgy Rocker is a bad boy from Casey’s past, cocky, neglectful, and overcompensating; (male identifying, tenor range.)*

Woman #2 (Jewish Chorus / Allison / Google Girl / Female with Megaphone #1): Allison is Aaron’s ex-fiancé, gorgeous, sexy, uptight, conservative, controlling, and manipulative; (female identifying, belt-mix)*

Man #3 (Waiter / Casey’s Christian Father / Twitter / Friendly Therapist): a career waiter, who dabbles with songwriting and performing on the side; a romantic; he wants nothing more than for love to blossom at his restaurant; a closet poet as well. Casey’s Christian Father is a stereotype super-Christian, praising the Easter Bunny and denouncing Judaism; (male identifying, bari-tenor range).*
