“A church is a place where people go to see something that is very difficult to see. A place where the invisible is — at least for a moment — visible. The theatre can be that too.”

Summary

Twenty years ago, Pastor Paul’s church was nothing more than a modest storefront. Now he presides over a congregation of thousands, with classrooms for Sunday, a coffee shop in the lobby, and a baptismal font the size of a swimming pool. Today should be a day of celebration but Paul is about to preach a sermon that will shake the foundation of the chuch’s belief. A little-big-play about faith in America-and the trouble with changing your mind.

Characters in the play:

Paul, the Pastor Age: 40s-50s

Paul started a small, storefront church 20 years earlier. The church has now grown in to a popular mega-church. He is idealistic, but also wants to do the right thing. Has power affected him? Maybe. Who knows?

Elizabeth, Paul’s Wife Age: 40s-50s

Elizabeth has helped Paul as he has grown the small church into the mega-church it is today. She may miss those early days. Sometimes I think she is the smartest person in the play.

Joshua, Associate Pastor Age: 25-30s

Joshua was a troubled teen when he found this church. He has grown up in this church with Paul as as a mentor. He has been successful in bringing in more young people. He is a strong man.

Jay, a Church Elder Age: 30s-60s

Jay was part of the early days of the church when it was a small storefront with just a few members. He is a man of integrity and strong faith, and is also a good communicator. He might be a father-figure or older-brother figure for Pastor Paul.

Jenny, a Congregant – Choir Member Age: 30s-50s

Jenny loves this church, which she discovered when a young single mother in-need. She received a lot of help and resources from the congregation and is very loyal and devoted to this church.

There is also an ensemble or choir in the play. Four songs/hymns are sung during the play, and possibly be singing before the play begins. This could be an ensemble of 3 or 4 members, or an actual choir of several members. A choir director and musicians needed as well. If you are interested in this, please make a note of it in your audition form.
